Starlink Updates Privacy Policy to Include AI Data Use Amid SpaceX-xAI Merger Talks
Starlink has quietly amended its privacy policy, effective January 15, to permit the use of customer data for machine learning and AI development unless subscribers explicitly opt out. The updated terms also allow data sharing with contractors and third-party partners, raising concerns among privacy advocates.
The policy shift coincides with reports of potential merger discussions between SpaceX and Elon Musk's xAI. A Reuters investigation noted the absence of AI-related data clauses in Starlink's November privacy document. SpaceX declined comment when pressed for details.
The satellite service collects extensive user information—including geolocation, payment details, IP addresses, and even inferred behavioral data from communication patterns. This development emerges as SpaceX eyes a 2026 IPO with a projected $1 trillion valuation.
